The new for 2020 Colt Python does a nice job reimaging the .357 Magnum 6-shooter revolver that’s hewn from modern stainless steel alloys. The gun’s elevated barrel shroud with longitudinal lightning ports makes it absolutely eye-catching. The Python’s available in 4.25” and 6.00” barrel lengths, has a target crown fronting the barrel, and it can shoot .38 Special ammo.

The Colt Python has an interchangeable red front sight on a black ramp. In the back is a fully adjustable black U-notch target sight. It can be adjusted for windage or elevation using a flat-head screwdriver.

The Python has walnut grips that have diamond checkering for the bottom 60 percent and are smooth with contour lines for the rest. This upper portion has the nice metallic Colt medallion atop both grips. A subtler version of it is etched onto the frame in between the cylinder latch and the top of the grip.

The Python has a transfer bar safety to prevent discharge when dropped. The hammer is thin and narrow.

The stainless steel looks great with a semi-bright finish. The cylinder has attractive reversed bullet flutings. Beneath it, the trigger sits in a quasi-kidney bean-shaped housing that provides extra room for gloves. But the gun’s real draw is the long rectangular lightning ports in the long barrel shroud above the barrel but below the front sight.

The shorter barrel has two of these ports while the longer 6.00” one has three. They look great and also function by shaving off some weight and perhaps permitting faster heat dissipation.

In either length, the barrel has six groove rifling and a 1 to 14” LH twist ratio.
